HERE - Venues & Indoor positioning
Most trips don’t end at the entrance of a building. Shopping malls, hospitals or campus have become indoor cities with destinations inside.

Venue maps
- Digital map of the venue (searchable, routable and navigable 3D indoor map)
- HERE creates the HERE venue map based on a floor map
-

HERE Indoor Radio Mapper
- Uses an indoor map (e.g. HERE Venue Map) as a basis to provide location reference. The user will need to select the current floor number and point exactly on the indoor map where she is
- Collects Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radio signals
- Create Radio Maps
The problem. Outdoor we have the luxury of using the infrastructure for positioning: GPS. As GPS does not work indoor, we have to use something else to provide positioning. Additionally, a venue is a complex 3D environment with different levels (floors), very different from outdoor map that is more or less 2D.
The solution. In order to give the user the same experience they know for the outdoor, we created a specific solution. We built HERE Indoor Radio Mapper, an Android tool used to enable your venue for Indoor Positioning. The user has to walk through the venue and collect a record of fixed Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth signals and their relative strengths. The indoor location accuracy can be then tested to see if accurate and then publish the radio maps. Having a high-quality map of the venue is important to ensure a successful indoor deployment. A high-quality indoor map can help the user to orientate thanks to elements that can be represented in the model like walls, doors or even furniture. Thats why using HERE Venue Map in combination with HERE Indoor Positioning has several advantages.
My role. I supported the team with the design of different features, prototype and test. It is a very technical application and making sure that our customers would understand the whole process of radio mapping was challenging. But we were able to improve the overall experience thanks to the many interviews we run with internal and external people. So we started to simplify the process or explain better, so they could finish the task without feeling lost.
